This study was conducted to examine poetry’s receiving of Yi, Baek’s poems expressed in Korean poetry Sijo. Many preceded studies made errors by selecting poems with biased views or not analyzing them appropriately. I discovered these problems and conducted this study to examine the degree and method of receiving and other characteristics of the receiving of Yi, Baek’s poems.
Most pieces that received Yi, Baek’s poem for the beginning added grammatical particles to Korean poems. It was found that the form of ordinary verses cannot be maintained when Korean poetry was received for the beginning of a poem and that many Korean poems with 7 phrases were received. When parts of Korean poems were received, there was a change in theme or some poems used short verses.
Also, when three phrases were received, some creative pieces were written based on the opinions of writers despite that the received phases had big influences on the overall pieces.
When two verses were received, receiving of first and second verses almost disappeared, but all verses of one Korean poem were received. receiving of second and fourth verses was done by bringing each phrase from two different poems. If two or more verses were received from Korean poems, Jangjinju was the most popular poem. receiving of first and fourth verses was only found in two pieces. In this case, the story began with the received verse and the last verse was received to finish with a similar conclusion. receiving of third and fourth verses was mostly receiving of fourth verse that was reluctant to have a short verse.
There were a total of 42 poems that received one phrase of Yi, Baek’s poetry. In receiving of first verse, the verse was moved directly without any translation. In the receiving of second verse, two or more verses were brought from one piece or it was brought with someone else’s poem. In many cases, the Korean poem received in the second verse was unrelated to other verses in the poem. In the receiving of fourth verse, poetic terms were mostly received as opposed to the fact that phrases were mostly received for the receiving of first and second verses. Also, the fourth verse was closely related to the theme of the original poem.
The poems that received Yi, Baek’s poetry were highly influenced by its lyricism, especially its entertaining and joyous aspect. This is particularly found in partial receivings. Furthermore, Yi, Baek’s poems were received to emphasize the theme or were translated to fit the needs of writers. This tells us that Yi, Baek’s poems were very actively received. Thus, we can conclude that Yi, Baek’s poetry pioneered active receiving of Korean poetry in Sijo.
