The present Kasaya of Taiwan·Korea·Japan was investigated and observed in this study. For the concrete content of this study, the materials, colors, structures and needlework; measurements of Kasaya; and patterns of Kasaya were comparatively analyzed.
Firstly, the common point of Taiwan·Korea·Japan is the regularity of the jo, jang and dan of Kasaya.
Secondly, Kasaya is divided according to the sects in Taiwan·Korea·Japan. The measurement is big and the number of jo is high in the Kasaya of the doctrinal order when compared to Zen- excluding the Tagye Order of Korea. And, half of the yeop is lifted up and there are patterns shown. The colors of Zen are mainly reddish brown or orange. On the other hand, the colors of doctrinal order are red, purple and brown.
Thirdly, there are characteristics of Kasaya according to each country. The Kasaya of Taiwan is symmetrical focusing on middle Jo, and half of the yeop is lifted up. The common point of Korean Kasaya is that it is symmetrical focusing on middle Jo- excluding the Nakja of Jingak Order- and the middle Jo is larger or the same as the left-right Jo. There is also the cheop. When the Kasaya is observed according to each religious order, the lotus flower knots on the changjakgu in the Kasaya of Chogye Order are original. The Kasaya of Tagye Order and Chentae Order succeeded the traditional Korean Kasaya, and it is different in the fact that there is the hand sewn Tongmun. Also, the patterns of the characters cheon (天) and wang (王) are on the cheop, which are sewn by hand. The cheop in Japanese Kasaya are hand sewn and the stitches are not revealed outside. The patterns are figured texture.
