This study analyses the environmental benefit and cost of port development and subsequent operation of it by an example of Dadaepo New Port development in Pusan. Environmental appraisal of port development in qualitative aspects has been generally carried out. But quantative assessment in economic value of port development has seldom been accomplished so far. In order to determine the appropriatness of port development we need to quantify the environmental impact of port development in economic value.
The development of Dadaego port consists of constructing timber/marine product handling facilities and hinterland processing complexes. The major environmental benefits expected by Dadaepo Port development are among others reduced air pollution, reduced traffic congestion and resulting social time saving, reduced traffic casualties, road maintenance cost reduction as consequences of reduced inland traffic of raw material as well as invironmental improvement of central residental area where previously affected by processing plants located around the central city. Whereas the expected environmental costs of Daddepo Port development are environmental deterioration nearby the port and fishery resource reduction around the sea. However net environmental effect of Dadaepo Port development is estimated to be positive.
