Even though pusan is an international port. it has many problems. Among them. especially the problems of physical distribution and environmental pollution are serious. therefore I think that the development program of Pusan port, including that of Nakdong river area must be considered not in terms of the extension of city development plan, but in terms of its own development. That is the development plan of Pusan port as of other international ports must be made. considering the current tendency of intenationalization. unrestraint policy. globalization. and localization.
Especially physical distribution problem. which is the most import thing in the port development program. and environmental pollution. which follows the port development. must be carefully studied. In this context. my study centers in the development program of Pusan port and Nakdong river area.
1. The development of Pusan port and the problem of physical distribution
Korea has gone through high growth because of continuous foreign-trade-orinted economic development program. Nowadays things have changed completely; In the age of free trade and unrestraint policy, Korea now has many things to face up to. Port development is very important since it is closely related with physical distribution. That is, in case of Pusan. port facilities to deal with the increasing quantity of goods transported are not enough and port distribution structure is not so effective.
2. A glance at physical distribution in Pusan and its problems
Physical distribution system in Pusan consists of the ground and marine transport. And the transportation of goods is usually to go through the continuous processes of entry, unloading, transportation, storage and inland transport. Thus. the physical distribution space in Pusan is to be complex position space. Facilities in Pusan mainly consist of railroad, road, storage, unloading facilities, and communication facilities. Considering the fact that port is dealing with over 90% of container goods in Kore. I think that it's time to promote the efficiency of port works for effective physical distribution.
3. The development of Pusan port and Nakdong river area
Pusan is lacking in not only port facilities but other Public facilities such as road. land for housing. land for industry. airport facilities, water supply facilities, and sewer facilities etc. In cases of port facilities, land for housing, land for industry and airport facilities, even though conditions of location and enough land in a certain area are secured laready, it's impossible to develop because there's no development fund.
4. The development of Pusan port and environmental problems
The development programs such as the 5th container port development program, the 6th container port development program, Sinsundae container port development program, and finally Gamchun port development program are to be completed successfully until 1997. Since the increasing quantity of goods transported cannot be dealt with easily, they are going on with the development program of Nakdong river area. It is the most important matter to solve the environmental problem which will result from the development program. One of the way to improve the quality of water in Nakdong river area and Pusan port is to connect port facilities and waste water disposal plant and to lower the pollution loading degree.
5. Conclusion
I think that there are some presupposition for the development of Pusan port, especially Nakdong river area. Close functional connection must be made between Pusan port and Nakdong river area. We have many things to do : long-term development plan of Pusan port, constrution of artificial island, construction of a new airport in Gaduck island, and construction of container base. To carry out all these successfully, there are such things as traffic connection between land and port. early construction of container base in Yangsan, and modernization of port.
Then Pusan can keep pice with the tendency of internationalization, globalization, the unrestraint policy, localization, preparing for 2000's.
