Kyungseong(the old name of seoul) as a consuming place is a world of everyday life, which is not only a routine and repetitional world of everyday happenings and acts but also a system of sign interpretation. This thesis aim; at demonstrating that works of modernists are reinterpretations of everyday life and analyzing what modernists interpretate from it. This thesis also analyzes the modernists' works not from a macroscopic point of the totality but from a microscopic of 'everyday life and its fantasy'.
In chapter two, I positively explain 'characteristics of Kyungseong' as a context of the 30's modernism in the literature. Based on the primary resources like magazines and newspapers of those days, I examine it in two parts l)the rearrangement of Kyungseong and 2)its features as a consuming city.
In chapter three, focusing on modernists like Lee Sang(李箱), Kim Gi-Rim(김기림) and Park Tae-Won(박태원), I analyze what they experience in Kyungseong as the consuming space, and how they configurate it. 'The department-store' is the most important mediation for them to experience Kyungseong. The department-store constituted a primary landscape of the abundant and the space where the public could contact with the consuming culture. Based on it, the fantasy of everyday life expresses, which can be named 'the department-store fantasy'.
In works of Lee Sang, Park Tae-Won and Kim Gi-Rim, we can arrest a utopian characteristic of a modem consumption mediated by the department store. A signifying effect of consumption which is beyond the use or exchange value, is a heart of its characteristics. Modernists of 30's interpret are the signifiances like 'the new', 'the happiness' and 'the might' from the department-store. I examine the way that the utopian signifiances of consumption are working, focusing on 'the roof garden' as a main motif of the department-store fantasy.
In chapter four, I explain how modernists understand an alienation resulted by the consumption as a social system In works of Kim Gi-Rim, it is represented as the image of making up mephistopheles. And in works of lee Sang, it is represented as the image of a labyrinth. 'The labyrinthine image' which means that a open alley is a blind alley, is a good example to show the alienation and despair resulted from the experiences of modem consumption. Finally, in works of Park Tae-Won, this is represented as the image of a closed city through which he endlessly circulates.
