In this study, the fantasy found in the poems by Lee Sang-hwa was categorized into three types; the first category was subversive the fantasy through the disguise of desire, which was usually used by the poet to reveal the fantasy through plants as poetic materials and related to the reality of the colonial period. He generated the effects by focusing on the description of landscape and revealing ambiguous and blurry images as they were, which offers an important clue to connect him to the symbolistic tendency.
Then the poet manifested the fantasy of the world of wonder and mystery through animals. He reinforced the symbolic characteristics further when borrowing animals than plants for fantastic images because animals were less subject to standardization in the sense of imagination and its manifestation and thus easier to transform than plants. Lee presents the suppressed life of the present in a paradoxical manner by connecting it to the mythical world of the past.
Finally, a focus was placed on the fantasy related to the loss of meanings and difficulty in his poems. When revealing the fantasy through inanimate objects, he would tend to make his poems difficult by rousing extremely negative or positive emotions and succeed in depicting the depressing and realistic suppression more effectively. In particular, he had this tendency to drive a scene towards a state in which meanings were difficult to be defined through word play.
The desire for and acceptance of Western poetry in the 1920 were widespread among the young people in their teens and twenties and highly likely to have easy access to their weariness and pathological awareness of reality. Lee's emotional tendency as a member of Baekjo is attributed to his greater exaggeration of the colonial reality in his poems. His perception of such absurd reality is effectively expressed by his the fantasy. When it's recognized that his poems were inclined towards decadent romanticism or Western symbolism in some aspects. his the fantasy can provide some answers to "how."
