This study examines the subject’s aesthetic quest and pathological signs in the novels written by Park, Tae-Won. They are based on modern city space where modernity is reflected and newly reorganized. The modern city subjects interact with the city space and experience capitalist life. The themes of the novel are ordinary things from the city life such as consumption, boredom, and neurosis. His novels keep the motivation of modernist novel of the 1930s and also show the way of adapting new circumstances like modernity and cosmos through the objective statement for the city space.
The author highlights aspects of city life that seem meaningless as well as the capitalist principles in them. It should be reconsidered that city life and the pathological nature in the novel are the abstract awareness and lack of critical consciousness. This is the reason his novels should be noticeable. He provides a valid key to track the origin and crossing point for the aesthetic traditional of realism and modernism as well as embodies the contradiction of the colonialism and capitalism ideology concealed in the 1930s modern city life. Based on this point, “modernoloy” in his works “Gobo’s Il-il(Mr. Gobo’s Day)” and “Chun-Byun-Poong-Gyeong(Riverside Scenery)” do not just describe modern city life but for the inner world of an intellectual under colonial situation. And “Chun-Byun-Poong-Gyeong” reconfirms the order of the colonized subject who disappears in colony.
The author walks around to observe the city life in modern society. When “Walking”, he sees the bourgeoisie, poor women in street for living, exhausted salary men, the unemployed wandering, and he notices the tremendous order of capitalism in it, supporting indifference, boredom, selfishness, and pathological nature. The point understood by walking is the author’s critical view about how the modern city’s natural is unusual and unhealthy. Therefore Park, Tae-Won’s modernoloy view toward “Chun-Byun” is the reappearance of the concealed capitalism desire.
