From the viewpoint of evolution theory, this paper clarifies that acceptance of modernity in Kim Soo-yeong’s poetry does not limit to simple techniques or versification methodology, and it supplied nourishments to spirits of poem embodiment to plow through this generation in his poetry and prose. What modification process it has gone through to emerge in his poetry is considered.
Although 『New City and Chanting of Citizens』, an anthology written by fellow members of New Poetics, where Kim Soo-yeong participated in 1949, was a result full of motivation by fellow members gathered together for a new literature movement with a modernist attitude, discordance of many elements, that is modernism, romanticism and defective colonialism of other classes, was detected in it. However, individualistic poetic world of each fellow member, although immature, had not insufficient impact on Kim Soo-yeong in his 20s, and contributed to his modernist disposition.
Kim Soo-yeong’s 「America Times」 contained in this anthology is a poem that shows a glance of self-awareness of a young modernist who went through colonialization. Longing for ‘new matter’ or ‘advanced matter’ had let a young modernist who experienced colonialization to come in touch with foreign publications, and it formed his yearning attitude towards the publications for his poetic self. That attitude has more clearly revealed in 「Publications that cannot be associated with」 and he progressed towards the subject with pessimistic attitude. Distress of poetic-self during this time is one that is discovered in a modernist of underdeveloped country who finds oneself placed under cultural colonial state. Captured with obsession of ‘fallen behind’ right after freed from colonial state, it is the distress of a young poet of an underdeveloped country, who sprung forward at knowledge and art blindly.
Kim Soo-yeong, through the process of being aware of the political reality and endless reflection, arrived at completing a new modernity gradually, after going through 6.25war and 4.19revolution. Especially, he becomes aware of the limits of the western modernism through translation works, and it can be seen that he agreed with the view of S. Spender’s 「Grief of Modernist Movement」, one of his translations, in which states that in the background of deteriorated western modernism, criticism of reality and civilization tumbled down to an ordinary ‘technique’ attaching weight to modernists’ techniques. Moreover, by translating the works of a critic group who understood poetry and politics and bloomed literature activity, represented by L. Trilling, he instilled criticism in himself about Liberal Party’s dictatorship constitution before and after suppressed freedom. Then, while freeing oneself from existing lyric poetry that had its purpose on emotional sympathy, and renewing poetic awareness through endless reflection, at the same time, by protesting violently toward unfair political reality, he enters the process of a state of acquiring another reality, overcoming individual artistic self-awareness of Korea’s modern poetry.
