Novels by Chae-Won Kim and her mother Jung-Hee Choi, despite the generation gap between them, both share similar motives that represent Korean women literature historic and feministic fates elicited by war.
As a representative 1930s women writer, Jung-Hee Choi crystallisedher life story into literature, giving it a touch of reality to her story. On the other hand, Chae-Won Kim used her and her mother's personal story to create a fantasy-like teality.
Therefore, this paper selected Jung-hee Choi's「Letter of Tangeum」and Chae-Won Kim's 「Illusion of Winter」 to investigate how the two motives historical awareness and women's destiny have encapsulated into different image in literature and also how these piece together in Korean feministic literature. Overall, 'Historical destiny' and 'Feministic destiny' were used to look into this in more detail.
In describing and analyzing the historical destiny, they both focused on the Korean War. In Jung-Hee Choi's 「Letter of Tangeum」, a single-mother's struggle for life and survival have been realistically delineated whereas, in Chae-Won Kim's 「Illusion of Winter」, she tries to avoid too much realistic detail but concentrated more on fantasy-like realism through recollecting the experience of the war.
In describing the feministic destiny, grandmother's yearning for son, mother's yearning for husband and child's yearning for father have been used to describe thar their fares, fate as a women, are chained together by destiny.
In 「Letter of Tangeum」, a woman bemoans and grunts about her life that is quire a contrary to her mother's a life in which she awaits her husband who eloped with his concubine but later decides to fulfil her role in raising her children. and accepts her destiny by showing strong motherhood to her children.
In 「Illusion of Winter」, the existence of different destinies of the daughter and mother was illustrated by them having different palm-reading. However, the daughter's hand takes after her mother's, which is indicative of their destiny sharing the same stem. The daughter soon realizes that her destiny is tied by her mother's destiny and decides upon an independent life. Thus, the experience relayed by the agony of the war, single mother-hood and the absence of fatherhood cannot be solely attributed to one's destiny but the historical destiny. Therefore, epic of personal life and history play interactive roles in formulating the motives of these novels.
Jung-hee Choi's own personal life as a part of the historical scene was encapsulated in her work. On the other hand, Chae- Won Kim tried to encapsulate the fantasy-like reality with a perspective of observer of the history. The mother and daughter writers thus opened up a new chapter for 21 st century Korean literature by describing one's personal destiny and encapsulating it into a grand historical destiny. Detailed and personal stories were taken up to embody more of a common story and this structure helps realizing the importance of destiny.
With the advancement of technology, the dividing line between reality and fantasy-like reality has become very thin io. the 21st century. Therefore, literature also needs to take up its position as the subject of fantasy-like reality and for this role, the combination of experience-based reality and the fantasy-like reality encapsulated by the mother and daughter writers have given them the opportunity to play the leading partners of Korean literature.
