The purpose of this study is to explain the features and nature of Korean party system by focusing on the DJP coalition that can be considered as a representative form of party coalition after democratization.
The key findings in this study are as follows: First, the DJP coalition shows that the political parties and political elite compromised their policy in order to obtain their office. However, this point does not imply that the nature of the DJP coalition was merely opportunistic and that it could be considered as an extreme example of office-seeking. Rather, the DJP coalition was based on a political exchange between the two parties in two salient policy issues, economic issues and unification foreign issues. For making this point clear, this study applies the recent multi-dimensional coalition theory to the analysis of the DJP coalition, focusing on the understanding of various contexts to have influenced the DJP coalition.
Second, despite its rational characteristics, the DJP coalition reflected the conservative nature of party competition in general. In other words, the DJP coalition reflects a conservative pattern of party competition deeply rooted in the structure of Korean party politics. In this regard" the DJP coalition can be considered as a
representative case to reflect both the change and continuity in the Korean party politics after democratization.
