This paper examines two yadam(野談), “Goksan Gisaeng Maehwa” and “Yigwanwon”, included in Gyeseo Japrok(溪西雜錄), a collection compiled and edited by Yi Hui-pyeong(李羲平) in the early 19th century. These narratives center on the Byeongsin Oksa(丙申獄事), a treason case in which King Jeongjo(正祖) persecuted rebel forces between 1776 and 1777. The two works narrativize the Byeongsin Oksa in different ways, thereby revealing their political perceptions of the event.
“Goksan Gisaeng Maehwa” fictionally reconstructs the Byeongsin Oksa by centering on the relationship between a treasonous official and a gisaeng who sacrifices herself for him. The narrative draws a parallel between Maehwa and Yu Rang(豫讓), and between the treasonous official and Zhibo(智伯), thereby emphasizing Maehwa’s loyalty(忠) and unwavering devotion to an unworthy master.
“Yigwanwon” is based on the historical fact that Yi Gwan-won(李觀源) was punished during the Byeongsin Oksa, but it incorporates fictional elements related to Hong Guk-yeong(洪國榮). Unlike historical records, the narrative portrays Yi Gwan-won as having been excessively punished due to Hong Guk-yeong’s false accusations. This reflects Noron(老論)’s political perception that it was due to Hong Guk-yeong that they suffered a severe blow during the Byeongsin Oksa. “Yigwanwon” is a work in which Yi Hui-pyeong narrativizes the Byeongsin Oksa based on his partisan stance.
Gyeseo Japrok contains several yadam that reflect Yi Hui-pyeong’s partisan and political perspectives. Thus, Gyeseo Japrok can be regarded not only as a literary work but also as a political text. It is essential to study Gyeseo Japrok with careful attention to the political dimensions of its narratives.
