This article, drawing on Gilbert Simondon's discussions of techno-aesthetics, aims to understand how art functions today in the interplay between technique and religion. Within this framework, it seeks to elucidate the interaction between religion and art in relation to contemporary philosophical theories of community, with a particular focus on Bill Viola’s video art as a practical example. To achieve this, we first analyze in detail how the triadic relationship between technology, religion, and aesthetic thought is established within Simondon’s techno-aesthetics, and then connect Simondon’s argumentation with the community theories of Jean-Luc Nancy and Giorgio Agamben. Through this, this article reveals that aesthetic thought and its realization as artwork possess a neutralizing power that counteracts the excessive transcendence of religion. Like religion, art aspires to the universality of narrative and seeks a community of senses, yet at the same time, it embodies a neutral power, a reversible force, that counters the excessive transcendence and separation of religion. To illustrate this complex relationship between art and religion, we analyze Bill Viola’s video work, particularly Nantes Triptych (1992).
