This study aims to apply Phil Zuckerman’s hypothesis in his book Society without God that a ‘society without God’ is happier than a religious society to studies of the relationship between a) religion and mental health, b) religion and social security/participation and c) religion in Korean society. The results can be summarized as follows:
1) Religion has a positive influence on individual mental health. This effect seems to be mediated by such factors as positive thinking and social support, although it depends upon such variables as the individual’s religious coping style, the secularization of society, the religious milieu, and the nature of religion itself.
2) The relationship between religion and social security/participation seems to have a negative correlation. According to Norris and Inglehart, the enhanced sense of security, which is influenced by such factors as education, public health, social welfare, and social capital rather than merely by economic development, reduces the need for religion. However, it seems to be difficult to prove an inverse hypothesis that secularization has weakened social capital or civic participation.
3) The role of religion in South Korea is difficult to be defined conclusively. The survey “Religion and Social Progress” in which Koreans evaluated the role of religion in social progress negatively, and another survey by Korean Gallup that concluded religion had not significantly influenced such variables as a sense of happiness, life satisfaction, and the meaningfulness of life, in particular, indicate that the effect of religion in South Korea with regard to the themes of this study is not substantive. Nevertheless, religious people, esp. Protestants have a tendency to assert the role of religion in social progress and quality of life. Indeed, religious confession and commitment have a significant influence on economic satisfaction regardless of real income. Although it is not easy to demonstrate these findings consistently, religion in South Korea seems to exert a positive influence on the interpretation of life, even though it may not change the reality of life.
