This study analyzes and interprets the revisions of the “Epitaph for Mr. Wang, the Chambong (參奉王君墓碣銘, Chambong-wanggun-myogalmyeong)” and the “Epitaph for Mr. Park, Grandson of Our Clan, Posthumously Appointed as the Jeongja of Hongmungwan (族孫贈弘文正字朴君墓誌銘, Jokson-jeung-hongmunjeongja-pakgun-myojimyeong),” examining how Park Jiwon (朴趾源) meticulously crafted these commissioned epitaphs. The aim is to provide a deeper understanding of both the general stylistic features of epitaphs and the specific approach taken by Park Jiwon. The revision of the “Epitaph for Mr. Wang, the Chambong” is characterized by its delicate modifications to honor both the Goryeo (高麗) Dynasty and the Wang clan, given that the deceased was a descendant of Goryeo’s founder. The inclusion of specific lines and anecdotes vividly portrays the character and enhances the plausibility of his actions. The epitaph includes a final section in the form of elegiac verse, which exists in two different versions. Among these versions, the one found in the Anthology from the Pavilion of the Winding Stream Party (流觴曲水亭集, Yusanggoksujeong-jip) is suspected not to have been written by Park Jiwon. In addition, based on the facts presented in the work, the previously unknown identity of Mr. Wang can be confirmed as Wang Jinuk (王震旭). It appears that Park Jiwon wrote this epitaph at the request of Wang Jinuk’s son, Wang Inheung (王仁興), around the time he was hiding himself at Yeonam Valley (燕巖峽). In revising the “Epitaph for Mr. Park, Grandson of Our Clan,” a notable feature is the removal of specific descriptions, which leads to an enhanced depiction of Park Susu (朴綏壽) as a person with a rich inner world. Rather than portraying the deceased as someone oppressed by family traditions and resigned to a tragic fate, the epitaph presents him as an individual with a profound and boundless inner world. This aspect is crucial for understanding the work. Additionally, Park Jiwon significantly expands the introduction to include an extended dialogue with the requester, providing a detailed description of the austere nature of the Bannam Park clan (潘南朴氏). This approach not only justifies the life of the deceased, who had no visible public achievements, but also subtly justifies and comforts the lives of the requester and the author himself. In this manner, Park Jiwon employed various techniques to portray the deceased as a distinctive, real person while respecting the deceased’s clan and providing comfort to both the requester and himself. This approach effectively overcame the challenges posed by a lack of personal memories of the deceased and the need to be mindful of the requester’s presence, thereby showcasing the author’s skill and sensitivity.
