This paper explores the dynamic interrelationships between Confucian studies and political situations in the southwestern coastal region of the mid-Joseon Dynasty. At that time, the native scholars were proud of having the individuals of a national reputation, even though their region was a remote land by the sea. The important scholars and distinctive ex-bureaucrat who had resigned from the court or were exiled encouraged the neo-Confucian values of junior literati with writing and poetry. These intellectual bureaucrat from the southwestern coast played a leading role in the early years of King Seonjo’s reign when royal-vassals were withdrawn from the court. In particular, Yoo Hee-chun and Yi Huo-baek were trusted by the king and respected by neo-Confucianists.
The confucius officials were divided into East and West parties after confronting over personnel affairs and policies. In process of intensifying the competition and conflict between the two factions, a few figures of the East pressured and restricted the royal authority through public criticism. A scholar-officials who criticized the throne with both verbal and written works suffered severe oppression in the wake of the Jeong Yeo-rip’s conspiracy case. Especially, the outstanding figures of the Honam region were sacrificed. As the Japanese invasion of Joseon in 1592 entered into a lull, the movement to prove that they were innocent became brisk. The main agent have studied under Jeong Gye-cheong in Naju, but the scholars of the coastal region inevitably be affected by such situation.
In 1608, the retired officials and literati in Gangjin established Samajae(司馬齋) for supporting students of Confucianism and founded Cheongryeon Seowon(靑蓮書院) to enshrine Lee Hu-baek. However the attempt of Daebuk to enshrine the famous Cho Sik(曺植) failed. At that time Yoon Yoo-gyem of Daebuk in Kangjin was caught up in a coup to expel the the second queen of King Seonjo. At the same time Yoon Seon-do filed an appeal that King Gwanghae should exile and kil Lee Yi-chyum. The intimate relative split up with different political views.
Yoon Seon-do who was released from exile due to the King Injo Restoration passed Gwageo’ highest-level in 1633. Around this time, six men from Gangjin and Haenam received the liberal arts certificate(紅牌). They failed to demonstrate their bureaucratic capability. In particular, Yoon Seon-do and Yi Su-in returned to the hometown. The two lived not far from each other, but did not exchange news. It can be assumed that the communication of the local society was also influenced by the factional opinion. Moreover, the region"s academic foundation was vulnerable as it was engulfed in conflict and confrontation caused by the conflict of faction. If so, It is sorry that two people with national reputation did not compete for educational activities in the region. In today"s world, this issue is one and the same
