A poetry board is a recording heritage found in the traditional buildings of Korea, and the board engraved with poem is hung on a pillar or a wall. The poetry board of historic houses, Buddhist temples, and pavilions show the traces on how the scholars gathered together, arranged an organization or a meeting, and built-up bond and unity through poetry. The boards left by Yi Hwang, Jo Mok, Kwon Dongbo, Hwang Junryang, Geum Namsu, Kim Sungil and other Yeongnam Confucian scholars provide insights into the poetical tradition of exchanging poems and poetry culture of the time. The topics of the poetic exchange works composed by the gathering of scholars were encouragement of studies and cultivation of mind, following the intentions of the previously composed works. The poems engraved on the board in the same building mostly use the poetic exchange techniques of borrowing rhyme and replying with rhyme sequences. Yi Hwang and his pupils exchanged poems and rhyme-borrowing poems by using the same rhymes at the spaces of cultivation in nature. Although these poems were composed at different periods, the poetry board holds academic and cultural significance for sharing the same poetic ideas and emotions. When compared with the Chinese poems compiled in the proofread literary collections, the poems engraved on the poetry boards sometimes use different characters. There are also board poems that are not compiled in the literary collections. These are not mispaging or misspelling, and the poems engraved on the boards hold values as the academic material as they preserve the original form. This study holds significance for its empirical analysis of poetic works by examining the relationship between the poetic boards, places with poetic boards, and their related stories and figures. This study also lays a foundation for using the poetic boards to explore the ideas and values of Confucian scholars and find out the contemporary meanings of traditional materials that have been preserved until now.
