The increase in vehicles, which is one of the major factors contributing to global warming, has resulted in environmental problems leading to stricter vehicle emission regulations worldwide. Hybrid electric vehicle(HEV), which combines the characteristics of internal combustion engines and electric motors, is effective in improving fuel economy and reducing exhaust emissions. This study examined the Grandeur Hybrid vehicle made by Hyundai Motor Company at Climate Wind Tunnel(CWT). The evaluation was conducted on engine operation characteristics when working the air-conditioning and heating system in summer and winter, the cooling and heating performance was tested at various outdoor temperatures. As a result, the HVAC system is a great influence on the fuel economy aspect, especially engine operating characteristics and battery state of charge(SOC). Experimental results showed that engine stopping and operation depended on the battery’s SOC and outside temperature. Ambient temperature rises, then the engine stop time increases, which is particularly affected by changes in engine coolant temperature. By checking the temperature of electrical components and the amount of heat in the coolant when the engine was stopped, it was confirmed that waste heat could potentially be utilized for heat pump system development. Further studies are recommended to investigate the development of the HEV’s heat pump system as heating in the winter to reduce engine use and improve fuel economy.
