The purpose of this study is to develop“Living Things and Environment”unit class based on the school gardens-local forest connected ecological experience program and investigate the impact on the“Ecological sensibility” and “Science interest ”of elementary school students. This study was conducted on two 5th grade classes at B Elementary School in D District, Seoul. The experimental group and control group are consisted of 22 students each. Both groups received a science classes on the unit“Living Things and Environment”in second semester of 5th grade. The experimental group was designed to use the school gardens-local forest connected ecological experience program, while the control group was designed to use traditional textbook-based instruction. Before the class, a pre-test was conducted on “Ecological sensibility”and“Science interest”. After the class, a post-test was conducted using the same assessment. As a result, it was concluded that there is a overall positive change in“Ecological sensibility”and“Science interest”of the experimental group. First, there was a significant improvement in elements of interest in nature, aesthetic experiences in nature, and empathy and compassion towards nature in“Ecological sensibility”. Second, elements of interest in science and interest in science learning in“Science interest”were significantly increased. Therefore, school gardens-local forest connected ecological experience class can give a positive impact on“Ecological sensibility”and “Scientific interest”. Based on this, we expect the development of various ecological experience programs that can be easily applied in schools.
