Research on the idea of m onotheism has continued to develop in complex times and has gone through various changes. The idea of monotheism, which is the core of the Christian faith, has been studied not only through historical circumstances but also through various theological fields and religious disciplines. In it, various opinions and colors of many scholars were added, and the research was divided into many different branches. However, systematically classified and organized data on the study of monotheism are very lacking. Therefore, the process of looking at m onotheism from a macroscopic perspective and finding the core of monotheism is an essential task.
The ancient Near East’s view of God is largely classified into polytheism, henotheism, monolatry, and monotheism. In general, research on the idea of m onotheism starts from various situations in the ancient Near East and is arranged in chronological order, so it is necessary to understand various views of God. This study utilized the classification of the view of God, which is a standard for classification of general m onotheism. The majority of studies using this method did not distinguish between henotheism and monolatry. However, henotheism and monolatry cannot be considered the same view of God. Therefore, this study deals with henotheism and monolatry separately. This point is uniquely different from the general summary of research history.
Research trends in m onotheism can be broadly divided into three categories: external influence theory, self-origin theory, and reform transition theory. The first is the ‘external influence theory’. The view is that the idea of monotheism developed due to the correlation between the ancient Near East and the Israelites.
The second is the ‘self-origin theory’. This is a view that the idea of monotheism arose in a specific time and space.
The third is the reform transition theory. The view is that the idea of monotheism has undergone a radical transformation in response to reformative circumstances. This is an original idea that argues that the idea of m onotheism arose as a result of reform, not as a result of inevitable religious evolution.
Research on the idea of m onotheism has been divided into several branches. Although research has been conducted for a long time, it tends to focus on detecting historical circumstances. As a result, research often either acknowledged the polytheistic roots of YHWH from an evolutionary perspective or was limited to archaeological and literal interpretations that did not take into account the religious changes and life positions of the Israelites during the long journey of the Bible.
However, if the distinguishing stage of monotheism is not viewed simply as an ‘evolution’ process, but is used as a stage of ‘recognition’ of the monotheism of the Israelites, the research will have the advantage of being able to be further subdivided and obtain more evidence. If we utilize the subdivision processes of this study, it will be useful to distinguish the polytheistic views of thought that are currently prevalent in the Korean church.
