The theory of primitive monotheism was proposed by Andrew Lang in the early 1890s. According to Lang, there is a belief in monotheism in the primitive tribe, and this notion was not derived from the concept of the spirit but was originally present. Although his thesis remains as a past theory of early period of Religious Studies, we can get some insights from the way it has been reinterpreted by various theorists.
First, we can observe the relationship between the formation of the theory of religion and theological premises. Lang’s theory gained supports by other theorists with theological intentions and were shared by missionaries in the field. Second, we can find the continuity of academic subjects in Religious Studies through appropriation of the themes in the primitive monotheism. For examples, in Durkheim’s work, it was interpreted as a god reflecting more general society. And, in the religious phenomenology of Van der Leeuw and Mircea Eliade, it formed an important theme of deus otiosus. Third, the primitive monotheism provides important insights into the correlation between theories and data in Religious Studies. The debate on the primitive monotheism began with asking about the origins of religion, but now it expands the question by inquiring on the formation of theories in the contact zone.
