Empathy, the act of understanding and accepting the emotions of others, plays an important function in everyday communication. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the content and methods of teaching and learning with consideration of empathy as an independent function. This study analyzes the linguistic realization of empathy with the grammatical items -gess-, -guna, and -ji, which are frequently used in daily life and are essential in Korean language education, and presents teaching and learning contents and methods. -gess- and -guna are used in a conversation to state the speaker’s inference of their interlocutor’s feelings based on what he or she says, so they can express empathy. -ji is used to express information that the speaker has already internalized and is familiar with, so it can express that one is well aware of and fully understands the other person’s feelings. Korean textbook s, developed relatively recently, only deal with the use of empathic expressions once and only partially, so there is a need to teach and learn empathic expressions more explicitly as an independent functional items. Accordingly, this study presents examples of structuring classes and speaking tasks to explicitly teach expressions of empathy.
