Linguistic communication has been considered as conveying explicit and/or implicit meanings of words and sentences. However, communication can be done based on linguistic forms. In this paper, we explore translations of the text in which linguistic forms play a significant role, comparing subtitle translation and book translation. Although the translated text has been considered similar to the source text in meaning, there are cases where meaning translation is not enough to convey the cognitive effects intended by the original writer. When formal properties are used for some cognitive effects, they need to be reflected in translations. Just like other communication, this translation is constrained by consideration of optimal relevance (maximal relevance compatible with the speaker’s ability and preference), of which the notion is defined and used in relevance theory. In other words, as long as they are willing to and able to do so, translators deal with a formal property used for some cognitive effects so that readers can achieve maximal cognitive effects from the translation with minimal processing effort.
