The purpose of this study was to explore the more effective content and methods of physical activity courses through investigating the phenomena that emerged in teaching and learning process. Participants in the study were second-year students who participate in physical activity course at the university of education located in the metropolitan area in the first semester of 2023. Five (3 females and 2 males) out of 35 students in the course were selected as participants for this study to collect qualitative data from formal interviews, memory notes, and evaluation results from the final written test and performance ability for motor skills. The constant comparison was used to analyze all coding data (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). The constant comparison using the open, axial, and selective coding is concerned with the inductive generation and suggestion of categories with comparison of all data collected. This study took a couple of steps such as triangulation, member check, prolonged engagement to increase the trustworthiness of data as reliable and valid during the process of data collection and interpretation. The results for this study revealed two primary themes such as ‘limitations for improving motor skills and improving teaching confidence and interest on PE. In terms of the first primary theme, three sub-themes were classified as ‘a lack of motivation’, ‘a low level of fundamental motor skills’, and ‘a limitation of class environment.’ In terms of the second primary theme, two sub-themes such as ‘developing pedagogical knowledge (PK)’ and ‘developing positive perception of physical education.’ In discussion, physical activity courses for pre-service elementary teachers need to provide contents and operate the course through not only practice lectures for developing motor skills but also theoretical lectures for developing PK and their interest in teaching physical education.
