A total of 67 short stories were written during Shen Cong-wen’s creative practice period. In about 43 of the 67 works, the author’s view of women is clearly revealed. In addition, the female figures in the short stories during the creative practice period have different characteristics depending on the regional background of the work and whether or not the character is married. To summarize, this is as follows. Most of the women in the works set in Beijing are closely related to the artist’s sexual desire. In the case of married women, all are free and active in sex. This seems to be the result of projecting the artist’s sexual desire. In the case of unmarried women, they appear as the incarnation of beauty that the artist would not dare to approach. This leads us to guess that young and beautiful women were the driving force behind his passion for life. The woman in the work set in Xiangxi provides psychological stability to the writer and, on the other hand, arouses the passion for literary creation. A married woman guides the artist to a space of happy memories as a benevolent mother, a wise housewife, and a lovely wife. The unmarried woman allows the artist to explore the inner anima in the mythological imaginary space by combining with the auspicious nature. Most of the women who appear in the short stories during Shen Cong-wen’s writing practice period remain as objects of observation by the narrator. Therefore, there are many shortcomings in both the role in the work and the artistic form. So far, it has not received much attention in the study of female figures in Shen Cong-wen’s novels. However, it should be emphasized that the short story creation during the author’s creative practice period is similar to the writing psychotherapy process. In other words, the female figure of this period relied on the artist’s experience and memory on a purely personal level, and sometimes truthfully revealed the deep desire and imagination, so it has the prototype of the female figure leading to the heyday of creation in the future. These characteristics can be the first starting point to deeply understand the female image in Shen Cong-wen’s novels.
