In this study, we focused on the first-person singular words contained in the lyrics of popular Japanese songs by male singers, and diachronically investigated the lexical variations and characteristics of the personal pronouns contained in each song. Specifically, we used data from the Oricon CD single annual sales rankings from 1968 TO 2021, the music download number rankings from 2006 to 2017, and the music streaming number rankings from 2018 to 2021. We analyzed songs by male singers who ranked high in the rankings.
As a result, we were able to see the “male-centered society” of the past and the images of women at the time portrayed by men, not only in spoken words but also in the medium of lyrics. It was also discussed that in recent years, the non-gender specific use of the personal word “watashi” has progressed, and that the tendency for the first person singular to the used differs depending on the characteristics of the singer, such as idol or non-idol. These results also revealed the close relationship between language and society and the nature of gender differences in personal pronouns.
In the future, my goal is to further expand the scope of my analysis and conduct similar analyzes of variations in second-person singular forms, pairings of first-person singular and second-person singular that appear in the same song, and popular Japanese songs by female singers.
