The purpose of this study is to investigate universal characteristics such as structure and symbolism of unit songs and to establish basic data on the ststus of it through structural linguistic analysis of the army unit song, which has a useful functions to believe the value of units and integrate members. In order to do this, 50 songs of army division units or higher were collected and analyzed the vocabulary and expression style of the lyrics. Based on the results of this analysis, the discussion point of the unit song was derived based on the concept of "langue and parole", "signifiant and signifié", and "binary opposition" proposed by the linguist Saussure through "writings in general linguistics".
The results of the detailed study are as follows. First, the lyrics of the unit songs are divided into three paragraphs, each of which is composed of the following words: "the unity of the unit around natural landscapes", "the will to fulfill the goal through sacrifice", "the pride of the strong unit and the glorious future" , Which proved to be a universal law of unit song`s lyric composition. Second, it was confirmed that direct and specific expressions instead of metaphor occupy most of the unit song lyrics for conviction of unit value and unit integration. Third, binary opposition structure which is the structure of opposing concepts of "enemy" and "our military" and "group profit" through "individual sacrifice" to achieve the goal of victory was found.
This study has academic significance in that it is the starting point of the unit song research and the structural linguistic analysis of the lyrics of the unit song. It is expected that the research based on various literary theory as well as structural linguistics will be activated in military arts and culture field.
