When an act, which we do with clear consciousness, is against morality or law, we are responsible for it. But are we to blame in moral and legal terms even if we are not aware of the fact that our acts are unlawful or immoral? Hegel handles with this problem in <morality>[Moralität], the second part of his Philosophy of Right. He claims that Oedipus should not be accused of patricide, because ‘my will’ is responsible for the deed only when I aware of what I am doing. Oedipus stroke an old man to death without knowing him as his father. But Pascal acknowledges such a deed as a crime. Aristotle is against this claim. He differentiates the not-knowingly [οὐκ εἰδώς] performed act into an act through ignorance [δι' ἄγνοιαν] and an act in ignorance [ἀγνοῶν]. He makes a judgment that the former is not guilty and the latter guilty. Hegel is for Aristotle. It is examined in this essay whether Hegel‘s claims are justified or not.
