In January 1800, artist Kim Hong-do created a painting titled Zhufuzishiyitu(朱夫子詩意圖) for King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, for the purpose of sehwa. The painting depicts scenes related to poems; each width presents an illustration of one of the Eight Items(八條目) of the Great Learning(大學). In the Hongjae’s Collected Writings(弘齋全書), King Jeongjo’s Harmonious Rhyme Poetry(和韻詩) about Poetry of Zhuzi(朱子詩) are written together. Therefore, it is interesting and valuable to analyze the political philosophy and visual specificity of the late Joseon monarch through the characteristics of the Shihua(詩話) in Zhufuzishiyitu(朱夫子詩意圖).
Focusing on the theme of Shihua(詩話) in Zhufuzishiyitu(朱夫子詩意圖), this paper first examined the aspects of poetic painting; specifically, the aspects of 〈Poetic Intentions(詩意圖)〉 are Religious Poetic Intentions, Ideal Confucian Utopia, and Poetic Intentions of Immortals and Buddhas. As an Religious Poetic Intentions expressing Confucian ethics, it emphasizes moral discipline and a sense of social responsibility; it also highlights the monarch’s Confucian ethics, embodied by the moral principle of Mandate of Heaven(天命), and champions the values and ideologies of Confucian thought. The Ideal Confucian Utopia style is simple and calm, suggesting peace and serenity; it conveys moral lessons through concise, straightforward expressions and emphasizes the deep connection between nature and people.
The first to the fifth widths depict the monarch’s moral development through the discipline of arithmetic. The sixth, seventh, and eighth widths concern the desire of the monarch to improve the people’s lives, depicting scenes of a life that can be realized through the direct political action of a ruler. The painting as a whole suggests the Good Governance(善政) of the monarch can bring about a peaceful, ideal country of New Citizens(新民).
