This paper investigates how Chong Kug-in(丁克仁), whose literary name is Bul-woo-heon(不憂軒), expresses his life philosophy, “the spirit of Anbin-nakdo(安貧樂道),” in his song lyrics. Anbin-nakdo is typically understood as a passive way of living that withdraws into nature and accepts the environment, such as poverty. However, the dialogue between Confucius and Zigong in the Analects, which gave rise to Anbin-nakdo, reveals its true mean- ing as a comprehensive attitude toward life that actively develops “life through effort” while endorsing passive acceptance of the environment. This concept encompasses “bin-i-rak(貧而 樂),” which refers to enjoying a simple life despite poverty and having a positive outlook on life while singing how beautiful nature is, being sincere, and cultivating oneself. The literary works of contemporary true Confucians, like Bul-woo-heon, who seek to un- derstand the meaning of life while appreciating nature and working to make the world a better place, primarily reflect this attitude toward life. Bul-woo-heon’s song lyrics capture the spirit of Anbin-nakdo, which speaks of a true Confucian who cultivates himself in accordance with wisdom and virtue, singing the nature and essence of life while striving to better the world. Among his three songs, the first song, “Bul-woo-heon-gok(不憂軒曲),” one of the “kyung-gi-che-ga,” shows an active attitude toward practicing the way of the sage in accord- ance with one’s intention. The next two songs, “Bul-woo-heon-ga(不憂軒歌)” and “Sang-chun-gok(賞春曲),” which are early sijo compositions, exhibit a positive outlook on living a peaceful life in nature and looking for the meaning of life in accordance with the nature. All of Bul-woo-heon’s songs discuss the character and essence of life in nature, display- ing an engaged perspective on reality that aims to restore human nature by rejecting the erro- neous notion of material prosperity. This paper demonstrates how “the spirit of Anbin-nak- do” is a significant driving force behind Bul-woo-heon’s literary works and life theme.
