The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast between William Wordsworth’s and Kim Sowol’s nature poetry. They were influenced by the romantic movement. Their imagination was similar in their pursuit of romantic spirit in nature. They shared some characteristics by emphasis on the individual’s expression of romantic feelings and emotions. Their understanding of nature was very similar; “the idea of being one with nature”. They recognized a spirit in nature and tried to be one with nature. However, there were differences in the pursuit of accord with the spirit of nature. Sowol experienced his unhappy condition under the tragic situation of Korea in 1920’s. Sowol considered that as Korea was dominated by Japan he couldn’t be one with nature and always kept away from nature. Wordsworth thought that the modern civilization acted as a significant obstacle that separated humans from nature. The mind of people had been corrupted by modern civilization. Wordsworth recognized that as the nature had the holy spirit, we could be one with nature. Wordsworth expressed in his poems that the sick mind of people could be overcome by getting closer to nature for the purpose of becoming one with nature.
