This paper examines poems and writings in Dongmunseon, or the Selected Writings of the East and illuminates diverse aspects of the cult of Naksan, the Korea’s Mount Potalaka where the true body of bodhisattva Avalokitesvara is believed to reside. It particularly pays attention to the disparities yielded from the comparison with the stories of same mountain delivered by Ilyeon in his Samguk yusa, or the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms. As a result, this paper confirms that both texts mention a pine tree and a blue bird as the significant motifs of Naksan, but with different implications. The difference, I argue, leads us to reconsider the meaning of the same motifs represented in the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara paintings of the Goryeo dynasty. It also suggests that Dongmunseon is instructive in reconstructing the history of the Avalokitesvara statue enshrined at Naksansa Temple. Based on Yi Gyubo and Kim Gu’s writings respectively, we learn that the statue was damaged and renovated in the first half of the 13th century, and finally destroyed and newly made several decades later. Lastly, this paper highlights the significance of a lesser-known figure Ikjang, a Goryeo monk whose activities are identified through several pieces of writings in Dongmunseon. Based on a close reading of his writing on Naksan in Shinjeung dongguk yeoji seungram, or the Newly Enlarged Edition of the Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea, it reveals novel aspects of Naksan cult which seems to have been circulated several decades before the compilation of Samguk yusa. The mural of the White-robed Avalokitesvara at the Amitabha Hall of Muwisa Temple in Gangjin is revisited as well in relation to Ikjang.
