Master Chŏngsan published a series of Geumganggyeonghae in Hwe-Bo, a periodical of Won-Buddhism, in 1936, or the 21st year of the Won-Buddhist Era. Unlike existing Korean scriptures centered on literal translation and interpretation, this effort aimed to create scriptures that could be easily understood and used by the public. It was a pioneering and innovative attempt to develop a Korean-style Diamond Sutra, taking into consideration Korean culture and the public. In the Geumganggyeonghae, Chŏngsan discussed the acceptance of buddha-nature (佛性) and the removal of delusions (妄想), interpreting the Diamond Sutra through a positive logic that expresses the essence of the truth. In addition, he emphasized the elimination of the four conceptions (四相) along with the ‘using mind’, regarding “responding without dwelling anywhere, giving rise to the mind (應無所住而生其心)” as the core of Diamond Sutra, and by emphasizing the ‘believing mind,’ he suggested a path for the public to access the best study. The faith and practice of Won-Buddhism is not aimed at personal happiness or achieving buddhahood but rather for “Selfless Service to the Public (無我奉公).” In order to help the public understand and engage in this practice, it is necessary to comprehend the Truth of Il-Won-Sang. Efforts to understand the Diamond Sutra as a way to grasp The Truth of Il-Won-Sang are beneficial.
Accordingly, Chŏngsan’s Geumganggyeonghae reveals the core of Buddhadharma for the public in an intellectually advanced era and suggests a direction for the right faith and practice. It still holds significant value and merits re-examination today.
