Research on interreligious encounters and dialogue has noticeably increased since the late 20th century. Initially, these studies were often conducted by systematic theologians or philosophers of religion. However, starting from the 2000s, the research topics have diversified, covering areas such as interreligious conflict, peacebuilding, learning, and cooperation, and scholars from various academic backgrounds have been engaging with interreligious relations. Around 2010, a group of scholars attempted to formalize these studies as “interreligious studies,” and since then, the field has been continuously growing. This article examines the background and process of the academicization of interreligious studies through literature reviews, while also exploring the current state, potential, and future possibilities of this field within the Korean academic community. In Korea, although there has been active pursuit of comparative religion, theology of religions, and interreligious dialogue, “interreligious studies” has not yet been recognized as a distinct academic field or formally introduced. However, this does not mean that there were no studies dealing with interreligious relations. This study introduces cases of research that exhibit the characteristics of interreligious studies and examines the potential of this field in Korea. Moreover, it proposes the name “chonggyo-kwan’gye-hak” to facilitate its growth into a more specialized and independent academic field in the future. This study is expected to be a signal to promote the field of interreligious studies as a new academic area, and through various subsequent studies, it is expected that research on interreligious practices and studies on religious practices in the public sphere will become more active.
