In the hand-down documents ≪周易≫, hexagram song (訟卦)’s ‘訟’ includes a completely negative image as it means ‘to litigate’ or ‘to appeal,’ but demands the adoption of a careful demeanor in order to not cause a dispute. Our paper analyzes the character structure and content of The Chu state in the Shanghai Museum Bamboo slip ≪Zhou yi (周易)≫ hexagram song (訟卦) that is identical in content to this, and in so doing confirm the differences between it and the traditional work. 訟卦doesn’t show a big difference between characters and vocabulary, but we do see a difference when we translate the meaning. We presume that this is a reflection of the age of civil wars’ linguistic habits that we were unable to confirm in the traditional work, but The Chu state in the Shanghai Museum Bamboo slip is the oldest edition of the ≪Zhou yi (周易)≫ editions, and because it was did not get through editing by the people who came after, the original appearance was not able to be saved. Therefore, we came to understand the original form of hexagram song (訟卦) and is expected to be quite helpful in resolving disputes with successive translations.
