Chinese mainland new-generation novelists are those who are born in the 1960s-1970s and who have a broad impact on the mainland literary arena in the 1980s-1990s. They rebel against the old literary tradition and break with the previous writers by making avant-garde literary experiments and pursuing novel narrative forms. Like in historical narrative, the way is to deconstruct and personalize history in a game-like style(i.e. humorous, relaxing, self-expression, free fabrication style)to overturn the traditional grand historical narrative and construct a new historical perspective and narrative form, that is, an individually free personal historical narrative form where postmodern deconstruction and subversion, and the demonstration of individual life and human nature are its core spirits.
As the most important characteristic of new-generation novelists’ historical narrative, “Game-like” style features the deconstruction of traditional norms, diminishment of great significance and reconstruction of individual rules. The game-like historical narrative is mainly revealed in “parody”, “Irony”, “collage” and other diverse forms. “Parody” is to humorously imitate classic historical texts, deconstruct the sanctity of classic history in contemporary perspective so as to realize the conversion to the present. “Irony” is a hidden contradictory narrative way, which reveals the conflict and paradox in history narrative through those paradox games in language, context and structure level. “Collage” refers to a patchwork of different historical texts and intertextuality, which emphasizes the fragmentation of historical narrative, deconstruction of the integrity of traditional history, and demonstration of The Polyphonic Spree game gesture.
The new-generation novelists’ game-like historical narrative subverted the grand historical narrative, broke the shackles of old ideas, freed narrative form from the tradition, and opened up a new literary creation mode, which bares considerable significance. But this game-like narrative should avoid falling into the form of unlimited form carnival and nihilism, to consider the social acceptance and the literary aesthetics and form a serious game-like historical narrative with its own rules and limits.
