The purpose of this study is to explore the function of historical imagination in exploring and describing historical narratives. I divided to discuss the historical narrative into two aspects: historical research and historical description. In this study, I tried to achieve this purpose through theoretical review of historical narratives and historical imaginations, and to confirm the results in the description of texts including highschool Korean history textbooks. Historical imagination help to group separated past facts under a theme and connected to a story for constructing narratives. The imagination that helps historical narratives to be constructed is the interpolation and the alternative interpolation of historical sources. The interpolation is to compose stories and to construct narratives by filling gaps in the historical texts with imagination. Historical thinking for this work is to a priori and rational imagination. In order to make an alternative interpretation of historical sources, it is necessary to raise a new question and to try to search an answer to it. This thinking has the character of ‘imagination as a supposal’. It is necessary the historical imagination that can expand the perspective of looking at the text for an alternative interpretation concerning to the same text. Historical imagination makes the historical narrative to be described convincingly and effectively. It is historical imagination to select an expression form appropriate for the narrative to be described. Textbook authors try to promote students’ understanding of history by changing the form of inquiry activities. Using the imagination to describe historical narratives with appropriate rhetorics, you can raise students’ interest and facilitate communication between authors, teachers, and students. Historical imagination helps us to describe historical narratives properly using rhetoric words as in literature without damaging the truth of historical facts.
