We live in a challenging situation in which different religious traditions make competing and conflicting truth-claims. Many theologians in diverse traditions have been trying to respond to this situation in their own ways. In his essay “(Tentatively) Putting the Pieces Together: Comparative Theology in the Tradition of Sri Ramakrishna,” Jeffery Long articulates his Neo-Vedantic pluralistic theology by using Pravrajika Vrajaprana’s metaphor of “a giant jigsaw puzzle” and his own engagement with Jain and process thought. The aim of the present paper is to examine and to evaluate Long’s Neo-Vedantic pluralistic theology from a Christian theological perspective. First, I argue that Christian theological and modern scientific criticism of process thought undermines the adequacy of his engagement with it. I also claim that pragmatists’ insight into the interpretive nature of human experience undermines the Jain doctrine of two truths. Finally, I point out that Long’s pluralistic theology has a difficulty in articulating the place of an exclusivist religion and the role of divine revelation and the agency of God.
