Paul Tillich is known as a master of systematic theology. However, if one looks at the works of Paul Tillich, s/he can know that he has a deep understanding not only in theology but also in philosophy, depth psychology, and arts. Especially because his theology has a characteristic of dialectical theology which answers the questions with the method of correlation, it can provide significant theological grounding to reestablish education theology. Paul Tillich has a theological balance that does not sacrifice the gospel for practice or vice versa.
The characteristic of Paul Tillich’s theology does not follow the traditional way as he builds his theology by finding in-depth questions of human existence. Also, he logically explains the role of the Holy Spirit who enlivens the human life and the justifiability that the Kingdom of God should be expanded in the community of the Holy Spirit as a purpose of time and history.
Such characteristic of Paul Tillich’s theology strengthens the ground of theology and direction of education. The path that people seek God as the object of fundamental interests of human-being becomes the substantial purpose of Christian education. Also, meeting Jesus Christ who renews human-being and guides them to change as a new creature becomes the core of the education. As well, the Kingdom of God that church education has to take in charge in the history explains what a mission of balanced education is. Especially, his method of correlation in theology grants theoretical basis to adjust to children in different stages in the field of education. Thus, this study found a good balance of Paul Tillich’s theology between Christian message and students and the possibility of healthy educational theology.
