The period from the 4th to 6th centuries in East Asian society was ‘the age of migration’. The migration of nomads from the north to the south triggered a series of migrations of other groups. This paper explored the migration of Goguryeo(高句麗) in relation to the neighboring powers of East Asia by expanding the issue of ‘migration’, which has been discussed only in the relationship of ‘China’ or ‘center and periphery’. In particular, using the cases of the Goun(高雲), Gorim(高琳), and Go Youngsuk(高英淑) families found in the literature, this paper examined the Goguryeo migrants and their society that left Goguryeo in the 4th century and settled and resided in the Former Yan(前燕). To be specific, this study identified the ‘border’ formed between the two forces of Goguryeo and the Former Yan, and identified the aspects of the migration of the Goguryeo people, which were the prerequisites for the Goguryeo migrant society within the Former Yan. Goguryeo people went into the Former Yan as prisoners of war, diaspora, and hostages. Furthermore, it explained that Former Yan’s governance served as a background of maintenance of Goguryeo migrant society. Within the Former Yan, the Goguryeo migrant society of more than 50,000 people was formed, and they continued to sustain the society by following the changes of the Former Yan's center. Even after the Former Yan collapsed, they maintained an independent migrant society with the identity of ‘the Goguryeo people’. Focusing on the Goguryeo migrants and their society that existed in the Former Yan, this study aimed to reveal that Goguryeo was a member of East Asian society from the 4th to 6th centuries, ‘the age of migration’, and had close relations with the neighboring countries. The significance of this study was that it shed light to the interrelationship between Goguryeo and its neighboring countries, deviating the research trend that has emphasized the one-sided flow of ‘from the center to the periphery’.
