본 논문은 박상륭 초기소설에서 주인공들이 찾는 ‘금성(金性)’의 의미를 분석하고자 했다. 박상륭 초기소설에서 금성은 주인공들이 찾고자 하는 ‘몸의 우주’ 의 진리를 뜻한다. 몸의 우주는 정신적인 세계로 나아가지 못한 물질로서의 우주로, 몸의 우주의 진리를 발견하는 것은 인간 진화의 가장 하위 단계이지만 또한 가장 중요한 단계라고 할 수 있다. 박상륭 소설에서 자주 등장하는 살해와 성교는 금성을 찾기 위한 구도적 여정으로, 죽음과 부활 즉 기존의 세계를 무너뜨리고 새로운 길을 열어가는 과정이다. 살욕과 생식욕은 인간의 죽음과 부활을 가능하게 함으로써 몸의 우주를 유지시키는데, 이는 여성을 교량으로 한 윤회의 과정이다. 이러한 과정을 잘 형상화한 작품이 「심청이」로, 작품에서 여성은 인간의 과거 죄를 대속하고 부활하게끔 하는 인신으로 상징된다. 즉 박상륭 초기 단편에서 금성이란 인간이 여성을 통해 윤회하며 과거의 죄를 사하고 다시 태어난다는 깨달음이다. 그러나 윤회가 단순한 원환적 질서라면 인간은 즉자적인 몸의 우주의 차원에 머무를 수밖에 없다. 따라서 금성의 의미는 단편 이후 발표된 연작들에서 인간진화의 다음 단계인 ‘말씀의 우주’로 진화할 수 있는 목적성을 갖는 것으로 확장된다. 말씀의 우주는 인간이 언어를 통해 신과 같이 보이지 않는 세계를 인식할 수 있는 차원의 우주다. 이러한 과정을 보여주는 작품이 「뙤약볕」 연작으로, 작품에서 여성을 통한 부활은 단지 원환적인 질서만이 아니라 일정한 진화적 흐름을 갖는 거듭된 부활이며, 이는 신의 의지와 인간의 의지가 일치하는 지점인 ‘자정’을 통해 이루어지는 것으로 묘사된다. 따라서 박상륭 초기 연작에서 금성의 함의에는 윤회가 말씀의 우주로의 진화, 즉 인간이 신이 되기 위한 목적성을 갖는 움직임이라는 인식이 더해진다. 인간이 신으로 진화하기 위해서는 인간과 신이라는 서로 다른 두 의지가 결합해야 한다. 때문에 금성의 의미는 중편인 「유리장」에 이르러 여성과 다른 상극적 질서가 결합해야 진화를 향한 윤회가 이루어질 수 있다는 것으로 발전된다. 작품에서 몸의 우주를 유지시키는 상극적 질서는 ‘용(用)’과 ‘체(體)’로 명명되는데 이는 신과 인간, 남성과 여성, 성욕과 살욕, 죽음과 삶과 같은 상극적 질서를 포함한다. 이것의 한 극단만이 강조되었을 때는 윤회를 이룰 수 없음이 묘사된다. 그리고 두 개의 상극적 질서가 결합하는 죽음과 부활의 장소인 ‘시중’ 은 원환적 질서의 양극에 위치함으로써 인간이 점점 진화할 수 있게끔 하는 것이다. 따라서 중편을 포함한 박상륭 초기 소설에서 금성은 생성과 소멸의 상극적 질서가 유지되어야 몸의 우주에서의 윤회가 이루어진다는 것, 즉 ‘양극을 갖는 타원형’의 깨달음이라고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 본 연구는 지금까지의 연구에서 명확하게 언급되지 않았던 박상륭 초기소설에서의 금성의 의미를 분석함으로써, 박상륭 초기 소설의 주제의식을 밝히는데 일조하고자 했다.

This paper attempted to analyze the meaning of ‘the nature of gold’ that the main characters look for in Park Sang-ryung’s early novels. In Park Sang-ryung’s early novels, ‘the nature of gold’ refers to the truth of “the universe of body” that the main characters want to find. The universe of body is a universe as a material that has not advanced into the spiritual world, and discovering the truth of the universe of body is not only the lowest step in human evolution, but also the most important step. Murder and sexual intercourse, which often appear in Park Sang-ryung’s novels, are a comprehensive journey to find ‘the nature of gold’, which is the process of destroying the existing world and opening a new path. A desire for murder and reproduction maintains the universe of body by enabling human death and resurrection, which is a process of reincarnation with women as bridges. The work that embodies this process well is Simcheong, and in the work, women are symbolized as human beings who allow humans to pass on and revive their past sins. In other words, in the early short story of Park Sang-ryung, ‘the nature of gold’ is the realization that humans reincarnate through women, forgive past sins and are reborn. However, if reincarnation is a simple circular order, humans have no choice but to stay in the dimension of the universe of the immediate body. Thus, in the series published after the short story, the meaning of ‘the nature of gold’ extends to having the purpose of evolving the next stage of human evolution, the universe of words. The universe of words is a universe in which humans can recognize an invisible world like God through language. The work that shows this process is a series of Hot Sun, and the revival through women in the work is not just a circular order, but a repeated revival with a certain evolutionary flow, which is described as being done at “Midnight,” a moment when God’s will coincides with human will. Therefore, the implications of ‘the nature of gold’ in Park Sang-ryung’s early series are added to the perception that reincarnation is the evolution of words into the universe, that is, a movement that a human being has a purpose to become a god. In order for human beings to evolve into gods, two different wills, human beings and gods, must be combined. Therefore, the meaning of ‘the nature of gold’ is developed to be the meaning that the reincarnation toward evolution can be achieved only when women and other counter-polar orders are combined in a short novel, Yurijang. In the work, the antipolar order that maintains the universe of the body is named ‘essence’ and ‘phenomenon’, including god and human, men and women, sexual desire and murder, death and life. When only one extreme of this is emphasized, it is described that reincarnation cannot be achieved. And the place of death and resurrection, where the two polar orders combine, is located at the anode of the circular order, allowing humans to evolve more and more and more. Therefore, in Park Sang-ryung’s early novels, including the sequel, ‘the nature of gold’ can be said to be a realization of the “elliptical shape with a positive pole”, that is, only when the polar order of creation and extinction is maintained. As such, this study attempted to help clarify the subjective consciousness of Park Sang-ryung’s early novels by analyzing the meaning of ‘the nature of gold’ in Park Sang-ryung’s early novels, which were not clearly mentioned in previous studies.
