This study focuses on the ‘cohesion’ in the writing of high-level Japanese learners. The purpose of the study is to understand Japanese learners’ writing patterns and guide them to improve their writing skill. The analysed data are the high-level Japanese learners’ study diaries submitted in the ‘Tandem Class’. The analysis method was to have two Japanese teachers check the awkward expressions in the writings. The results of the consideration are as follows. First, there were many sentences in which punctuation symbols were not placed appropriately. Second, there were sentences in which demonstratives and connectives were not used properly. In addition, in some sentences, there is a mixture of the written style and the spoken style, which weakens the cohesion of sentences. It is important to instruct learners to be careful of using those expressions that weaken the cohesion of the sentences. It is hoped that the results of this thesis will help to teach writing for the advanced level Japanese learners.
