This paper aims to review and understand Choi Seung-ja and Lee Yeon-ju’s poems, which reveal an aspect of women’s poetry in the 1980s and 1990s, in terms of misogyny. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick distinguishes the notion of homosocial from homosexual, regarding it as social bond between men. According to the theory, the bond between men is maintained through homophobia in pursuit of disallowing sexual relationship to disrupt men’s hierarchy and misogyny sustaining men’s dominance. Misogyny, objectification and otherization of women, is asymmetrically applied to women as ‘self-hatred’ and men as ‘misogyny’.
Women’s poetry has diverse aspects like as different conditions of women. Focusing on the aspect of subject while reconstructing the various achievement of women’s poetry, this paper demonstrates that the inclusive ways of Choi Seung-ja in the 1980s and Lee Yeon-ju in the 1990s are the strategy to become an abject and clarifies what it means. The manner of overcoming the prescriptivity of subject with filthy images implies agentivity of many kinds of women. Therefore, the similarity and difference of the poems are interpreted to understand how women’s poetry recognizes and embodies the structure of misogyny. Moreover, this paper connects the women’s poetry in the 1980s and 1990s in exploring the possibility of overcoming gender binary approaches.
