In this thesis, I tried to examine the meaning of ideas and idea critique in Choi Inhun"s criticism. Choi has been confronting the problem of idea continuously since he started his criticism activities. His critique of ideas has the meaning of critique of ideology. The reason why the planners of Problems of Modern Ideology asked Choi to write an article about the relationship between literature and ideology(“Literature and Ideology”) was because they understood his critique of ideas as a kind of ideology critique. For Choi, idea was a larger concept that included ideology, and the idea critique was a more fundamental level of discussion that preceded the critique of ideology. Choi showed that customs are the basis for the ideas and the incarnated expression of them through the equation of ‘idea=custom+method,’ and through this, he was able to prepare a basis for critical reflection on ideology as a hardened idea. The core of Choi"s idea critique was the problem of how to accept Western ideas and, furthermore, criticism of Korean reality. By criticizing the way of ideology acceptance Choi"s ideology critique had a special characteristic. Choi preferred the term idea rather than ideology. This is because Choi judged that it was not appropriate to deal with ideology as a case of hardened ideas as we do not have spontaneous ideas to Korean customs. Choi recognized the establishment of ideas based on Korean customs as an artist"s task. Because he was interested in establishing an appropriate perception suitable for Korean customs, Choi tried to discuss the idea as a more fundamental thing instead of the closed and hardened idea of ideology. In “Literature and Ideology,” Choi presented the nature of ideas and related tasks of literature through the metaphor of (DNA)′. When discussing with reference to Haeckel"s proposition that ontogeny repeats phylogeny, the process of remembering and reviving the process until the idea was created is necessary for the idea to function fully. This is one of the tasks that literature and art must take charge of.
