This study introduces the current status and future prospects of the ‘Feel the Culture of Korea’ program that has been provided to international visitors at the National Museum of Korea.
The National Museum of Korea has provided programs for the increasing number of foreigners in Korea, with the goals of respecting cultural diversity and encouraging intercultural communication.
Based on the analysis of a survey on what kind of Korean culture these visitors would like to learn about at the museum, classes on seal making, lacquerware decoration, Korean painting, Korean calligraphy, and metal art are currently being provided. These surveys were conducted with international visitors and international student groups.
Through analysis of the comprehensive learning outcomes, I was able to understand the difference between learning in schools and museums. Museums should include the goal of communicating cultural differences among participating individuals in the process of developing international programs.
Based on its findings, this paper suggests that first, it is necessary to make active efforts to expand the scope of the program; secondly, the program should be diverse and flexible in its composition; and thirdly, the continuous development of the program is required in order to allow the participants to understand various cultures and learn from each other in the process.
