Today"s science museums serve to supplement the existing education system to provide scientific knowledge and education in ways that schools cannot satisfy. Instead of simply delivering information via text, museums simulate the scientific process of basic experimentation, thereby providing its visitors with more effective means of learning about various scientific theories.
However, today"s science museums are going off track from their intended purpose of providing supplementary education as they focus more on delivering ostentatious performances and attractions to draw the crowd. While there is no argument against the fact that stimulating the senses can provide more effective means of education than just visual exhibition, museums run the risk of focusing solely on the theatrics. On the other hand, museums must also consider attracting a certain number of visitors in order to sustain museum operations. Such are the difficult real-life issues that science museums face today.
Unlike history museums, science museums by nature cannot be structured easily to provide an overall narrative. However, the composition of the contents must reflect the intent of the museum and educational purpose of the theme involved. This study will examine how the exhibition of science museums are composed today in such context.
This study will analyze how the narrative structure is expressed in science museums, which have the purpose of providing scientific education. Through such analysis, the study aims to assess how science museums" fundamental purpose, themes, and intent of establishment are expressed as narrative structure in the exhibition content.
