This article is a critical review on studies that dealt with the beginning and end of Korea’s relationship with the outside world during the so-called “Open Port period.” Primarily examined here are two accomplishments, which would be Shin Hyo Seung’s Shinmi Yang’yo, which examined the armed conflict between Joseon and the U.S. that broke out in 1871, and Han Seong-min’s Study of Japan’s “Annexation of Korea,” which examined the process that took place in 1910.
For a long time, the Korean historical community defined this “Open Port period” as an era when Korea opened its gates to the outside world and pursued Western-style modernization. But in reality, Korea faced external forces’ political and economic invasions of the Korean peninsula during this period. In the end, Korea was even colonized by Japan in 1910, through the “Korea-Japan Annexation Treaty” Historical studies that examined Korea’s foreign relations in this period concentrated their efforts on determining the nature of invasions from outside forces, but in the process invited some criticism for depicting Korea as a mere object of the situation.
It should be noted that both studies mentioned above tried to perceive Korea as one of the Main bodies in action throughout the situation. They endeavor to overcome the previous dichotomous approach which has viewed everything as either “invasion” or “resistance.” Their efforts generated some noteworthy results: First, they managed to escape from a previous notion which considered the U.S. and Japan only as ‘superpower states,’ and instead they offer an objective assessment of both countries’ real conditions at the time of their advances on the Korean peninsula. Second, from a global historical standpoint, these studies attempt to examine the relationship between Korea and the U.S., and Korea and Japan for that matter, on a multiple levels. Third, they effectively pave a way for a new kind of studies, which would hopefully focus on the historical events’ “East Asian” context, and the inter-connected nature of World history.
