This study aims at investigating students’ useful and preferable genres for business English writing and their rhetorical features in job applications at a Korean university. The participants were fifty students majoring in English and a variety of disciplines. The data was collected from an open-ended questionnaire and students’ job applications. Students’ written texts were analyzed based on a synthesized model, the ‘Goal-Wish Move’ pattern. The findings revealed that CVs and job applications were the most useful and preferable genres. However, these two were also the most reluctant ones in addition to drawing maps. Meanwhile, 75% of the students adopted their own strategies in writing, using different rhetorical patterns individually, and the ‘Goal-Wish Move’ pattern provided an insufficient yardstick to differentiate the quality of students’ writing. This study concludes that both life-world and experience can impact students’ perspectives and writing products.
