Regionalism is recently estimated to be weakening but still considered an important factor in elections. Various theories which are employed to explain the phenomenon of regionalism in Korea contribute to explain its causes but also reveal some limitations. This article tries to explain it in terms of identity politics. The identity defines people as individual and social being, and people persue their political values and goals by identifying themselves with social groups. In Korea, the regional identity has been highly forged through long history. The structure of Korean politics, narrow configuration of political ideologies and political parties isolated from the civil society, provided an occasion for the regional identity to be expressed as the regional concentration of votes, when the democratization of 1987 erased the previous political divide and provoked an political vacuum. In particular, the contemporary history made more consolidated the regional identity of the residents of Honam who experienced alienation, discrimination and democratization movement of Gwangju, and leaded to a strong concentration of their votes. To get rid of the regionalism, we need to transform the structure of Korean politics.
