Hguchi Ichiyo describes the essence of love as ‘Itofu-kofi’ in her diary. After breaking up with Nakarai Tosui, her mentor of a novel, she realized her deep love towards him and became distressed. The undying spirit of love for Tosui was depicted as ‘Itofu-kofi.’ The idea of ‘Itofu-kofi’ originated in the Japanese poetry, but it was not expressed in the Japanese poetry but developed in the novel world. ‘Itofu-kofi’ is the mind that the contradictory feeling that love and hate exist together will eventually reject the man who loves it. This can be said to be the original lover of Ichiyo. In the novel, ‘Itofu-kofi’ is in the form of “Nigorie” and the beginning is “Akatsuki-zukuy.” And the imperfect form to cut off the attachment of love and hate is “Yamiyo.” These three works can be categorized into the ‘Itofu-kofi’ series. Among them, in “Yamiyo,” the heroine's feelings are expressed very strongly. In particular, the development of murder abetting as a fiance who declares divorce by using the heart of a man who loves himself is very rare in all of Ichiyo’s works, and it is noteworthy because it is a turning point among the ‘Itofu-kofi’ series.
