In Desert Exile, Yoshiko Uchida remembers the pain and shame of Japanese American internment during the World War Ⅱ. After Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese, her family was transferred to an internment camp in Topaz, Utah. Uchida recalls that she had lost her dignity as human beings in the camp. Being interned in the camp, she couldn’t help but feel depressed and helpless. Actually, the feelings of rage and fear felt by Japanese Americans who had been incarcerated and interned in the camps were turned inward, leading to feelings of depression and shame. After the World War Ⅱ, however, Uchida had the opportunity to stay and study in Japan as a Ford Foundation Foreign Area Fellow. Her experience in Japan was very positive and restorative though the evacuation had been negative and depleting. When she came home, Uchida became aware of a new dimension to herself as a Japanese American. As a Japanese American writer writing her own experience and perception, she now hopes that Japanese American’s unfair and disgraceful incarceration history, due in large part to racism, won’t ever happen again.
